However, in December of 2000 tragedy struck when OMC filed for bankruptcy protection due to financial struggles caused by increased competition from foreign manufacturers. This led to significant layoffs at the Norman plant with only about one-third of employees remaining after restructuring efforts were completed in March of that year. Despite these challenges faced by OMC/Sweetwater during this period, the plant in Norman continued to operate and produce quality pontoons under new ownership. In 2001, Yamaha Motor Corporation acquired OMC’s boat division and rebranded it as Godfrey Marine once again.
